The Electric Solar Vehicle Championship(ESVC) is Asia’s Biggest Solar Car Event. It aims to raise awareness among the current and future generations of engineers regarding renewable energy and innovative transportation solutions. Competing teams are required to build solar powered Electric Vehicles that adhere to strict standards and specifications. The teams design and build these vehicles with stability, ergonomics and safety firmly in mind.
Electric vehicles (EV) operate using both an electrical and mechanical infrastructure consisting of many sensitive components. This includes electrical control panels, switches, transformers as well as power conversion and storage capabilities. EV’s can be susceptible to electrically induced fire hazards due to power surges, arching and Li-ion cell leakage The consequences of fire in any of these components during a race can be overwhelming. They include extensive downtime, loss of expensive and scarce equipment and perhaps even the endangerment of lives.
Supply and guide the installation of a reliable fire suppression system for the Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering (PCCOE) solar powered electric vehicle. Being susceptible to fire and in order to aid the unhindered performance of the vehicle it is imperative to protect the ESVCs battery pack along with its power conversion, monitoring equipment and other vital components housed in the engine bay. These equipment are essential for the safe operation of the vehicle and it is critical that they are protected from fire in order to provide an opportunity for the team to showcase their talent.
FirePro Engineers have an impressive track record of helping organizations protect assets in challenging applications. Guiding young Engineering students with a passion for sustainability and motorsports is truly an honor and the event presented the opportunity for FirePro India Engineers to get involved. The project was well served by the fact that FirePro system’s robustness, space saving, low maintenance and technical capabilities are uniquely suitable for ESVCs. Importantly and in keeping with the event’s underlying philosophy and mission FirePro’s extinguishing agent (FPC) is listed as Green-Tech.
FirePro supplied two bespoke fire suppression modules as per ESV standards and specifications. Team Solarium crew carried out the installation adhering to designated quality standards with the assistance of FirePro India engineers. The system protects the ESV battery pack (energy storage system) and equipment in the engine bay. It is designed to suppress, control and therefore minimize the effects of fire such as down-time and possible collateral damage. Team Solarium won the Best Design Award and came 1st in the Hill Climb and 2nd in the in Cross Pad.
